When was the last time one of your characters surprised you? What did they do?

It wasn't so much the character as the situation: in my (still incomplete, still untyped, still unposted...) Nano B5 fic, I wrote an event that worked out PERFECTLY with aired/written canon and ended up explaining a character's flaws and avoiding a time-travel paradox, and I didn't even do it intentionally! It was one of those totally intuitive 'eureka!' moments.

430. What time is bedtime?

Well, since I'm the boss, it's pretty much any damned time I say it is. I mean, it's not like I absolutely have to be awake at a certain time unless there's an early meeting scheduled -- and I really try to avoid those if I can. It's not like when I was in GROPOS or running security and had to get up at oh-god:30 every morning.

Of course, there's really not all that much to do if I stay up late. I'm not a party person, and it's not like I'm entertaining guests most of the time. It's just that I've never been a morning person, and I'm just more awake and alert at night. And we'll just ignore the fact that I don't sleep all night through most of the time anyway...

So yeah, I sit up and watch Daffy Duck cartoons, or read and work on translating more of Galenn's and Valen's writings, or poke around in the project files to see what other things need looking into. And some time around the hour of the wolf I wake up, realize I've got my face mashed into the table, and stumble off to bed.

Yeah, it's not the healthiest pattern in the world and I probably should do something about it. And I gotta figure my choice of reading material may just be contributing to some of those restless nights. Sure as hell gives my brain enough to chew on while I'm trying to get some shuteye...

Just gotta keep reminding myself that the supposed easy fix I know wouldn't really fix anything at all, and drinking myself to sleep really would make it all worse in the long run...

424. If you were to become famous (or infamous) for one day, what would be the reason?

He'd grown accustomed to living in the spotlight over the past few years, but he was never going to like it. Of course, as one of the richest men on Mars and head of one of the wealthiest and most powerful corporations, it was pretty much expected. But Michael Garibaldi had never been comfortable with the role of public figure.

It was bad enough when he and Lise got divorced -- they had parted amicably enough and he was more than happy to support her and their daughter Mary, but he just didn't feel that it was everyone's business. Both the tabloids and the legitimate news outlets seemed to view it differently. Though when he was in a charitable mood he supposed that since he had originally taken over Edgars Industries from Lise's previous husband, William Edgars, some investors may have had concerns about the fate of the company. And that much was fine. But he drew the line when certain reporters started speculating about the more personal aspects of things.

He'd never much liked dealing with them, but lawyers did serve a purpose, and the news outlets -- and especially the tabloids -- learned quickly that it was wise to tread lightly and stick to the facts when writing articles about him.

And that's what made it so hard to deal with when he dragged Bester in for the crimes the Psi Cop had committed. All those terrible things he had done to his own friends under Bester's control -- all the humiliating things Bester made him do -- and they were all true. He couldn't hide behind libel protections or anything like that, because every word of it was the truth.

When the news hit the web the next day, he sent an assistant out to buy a case of the strongest liquor they would sell to humans on Mars, and then it was a long time before he managed to crawl back out of the bottle and show his face in public again. At least that flaw he was used to everyone knowing about...

005 (1) Nightmare

There are nights when he can tell it's going to be a bad one even before he tries to go to sleep. On those nights it takes a lot more willpower to keep from calling someone up to deliver a bottle of something strong -- just to help him sleep, of course. Except that he knows that wouldn't be the way it ends up going. It never is. If he starts drinking now, he's just not going to stop -- ever -- until it kills him.

And so he shuts down the file he was pretending to read and sets his comm on its recharging dock before he can give in to that weakness; strips and pulls on his pajamas, then throws himself into bed, wraps the blankets around himself and calls out "Lights off."

The computer obeys instantly, though there's a soft glow coming from the bathroom -- enough to confirm that he's alone in his bedroom... Not that that comes as any kind of surprise.

He's a little surprised that sleep comes so quickly, but it drags him down into a familiar blackness. And once he's there, he's not alone any more.

They stand side-by-side on the ridge, looking down at a half-buried nightmare from another time. The blackness of its skin doesn't shimmer as much as he knows they do when healthy, but it's still so compelling it's hard to look away. Even when he feels them crawling in the back of his mind, skittering icepick legs in the butterscotch dust. And he knows, suddenly, if he turns to look behind them, They'll be standing there; eyes like rows of glowing coals from the pit of hell, smiling at him...

"Jeff, we--" He turns to look at his companion, wanting to warn him, and terror grabs him around the throat and squeezes. Hard.

"Hello, Mister Garibaldi." That smug, knowing smile, the glittering black eyes, and that mocking salute -- he knows them all too well. And the mind-numbing terror the sight of this man brings completely overrides the question of how he's standing there in his Psi Cop uniform without so much as a breather mask.

It says something about him -- he isn't really sure he wants to know what -- that this man terrifies him more than the Shadows and their ship combined.

"Bester!"

"In the flesh, Mister Garibaldi." And he's far too cheerful, glee practically blazing forth from him. "You've missed me," Bester purrs, and he shivers as he hears that voice in both his ears and his mind.

"No, Bester. I really haven't," he answers, his hand reaching for a sidearm that isn't there.

"Oh, but you have..." The smugness of that tone sends a shiver through him, and suddenly he falls to his knees, helpless as the master manipulator tugs on his strings. "You've missed me, and you'll always come back to me..."

The scream when he wakes up tears his throat raw, and it's probably a good thing that he spends nearly every night alone...

420 - First

The first day I stepped foot on Babylon 5, Jeffrey Sinclair was standing there at what would become the customs area, waiting for me with a welcoming grin and a warm handshake.

I remember turning that handshake into a hug, but hey -- I am Italian and I'm a hugger. Wasn't like he was really complaining, either, but that's another story for another time.

That first year -- before the station really got up and running and the last of the ambassadors arrived -- we spent a lot of time getting to know the place. A lot of the people on board were the construction folks and other workers, so while there were security issues every now and then, it wasn't like things got later when so many more people were there. That gave me time to do things like explore all the nooks and crannies, and find secret passages and the places where crooks and smugglers might hide out.

And I wasn't alone in this either. Jeff accompanied me on my explorations more often than not. See, that's something most folks didn't know about him -- he wasn't just a real hands-on guy, he also really knew every inch of the station. Heck, there's even graffiti from the two of us, behind some of the paneling, because we snuck through there before they closed it all off.

That first year was a lot of fun -- of course we did have to stop playing hookey quite so much after G'Kar, Londo, and Delenn arrived. Though there were a couple of times when Londo came along...
